Rep. Louie Gohmert: Hate Crimes Act holds soldiers hostage…
October 8, 2009
Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas described the Matthew Shepard Act which is attached to a defense authorization bill as holding soldiers hostage and a sociological attack on the morals of America. Sometimes I’m left speechless.

I just can’t believe that someone could be so utterly hateful and out of touch with the basic human spirit. The guy actually knows what he is about to say is offensive and of the mark, “I don’t mean to offend”, but you do Congressman you do mean to offend.
Your remarks are exactly what encourages hate crimes! Your choice of word incites the type of violence and intolerance the bill looks discourage. I mean for crying out loud, you are a US Congressman, why don’t you act like one and show some sense of compassion and respect. Have you no sense of responsibility or accountability regarding your reckless grandstanding. Do you realize that your explosive, insensitive language will put some innocent man or woman in harms way because they are or thought to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered? I just can’t believe that this kind of rhetoric is acceptable on the floor of the US Congress. It is truly a sad day when our elected officials aren’t held in check by their peers, the institution or the public at large.
This man should be censured for the equivalent of inciting a riot or yelling fire in a crowed theater.
This is a representative from a state that has a governor who is championing leaving the union. The same governor who allowed a person to go to his death without properly investigating his defense. Texas is the land of scary stuff and I think we as a nation would be better off without them.
Shameful, you sir are shameful
